Poseidon is a son of Cronus and Rhea. He and his two brothers, Hades and Zeus, split up the world for themselves when they grew up; Hades getting the underworld and everything under the earth, Zeus getting the sky, and Poseidon getting the seas. Poseidon became the Greek God of the sea and earthquakes.
Poseidon had three sisters, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera. Two of which are in the Council of Thirteen. At one point Poseidon wanted Demeter to be his wife so he created the first horse to try to please her, but she still declined. Poseidon ended up marrying a water nymph named Amphitrite and she rules the seas while he is out being the god of the sea.
Poseidon was very petty and argumentative so he got into a lot of fights with the other gods causing large tempests and earthquakes. To get revenge on the other gods Poseidon raided a lot of the other gods cities and tried to take them over. Athena especially gets on his nerves because Athens was named after her and not Poseidon. In the myth, the Athenians didn't know who to name their city after. Poseidon then hit the ground with his trident and created a humongous saltwater spring in the ground in the center of the city. Then when he was admiring his work, Athena created the olive tree. Athenians saw that the olive tree was more useful and named the city Athens.
The Trident is Poseidon's most prized possession; it has the power to create, destroy, and kill. Poseidon is usually depicted with the Trident in his hand. It is second to only Zeus' Lightning Bolt in power. Animals that are sacred to Poseidon are horses and dolphins, and he created both.
