Ceres is the daughter of Saturn and Rhea and she has five siblings; Jupiter, Neptune, Pluto, Juno, and Vesta. When their father died and the boys split up the world, Vesta was cast aside because she was simply the goddess of the hearth. Ceres is the Roman Goddess of sewing, gardening, and the harvest. She also taught humans how to grow and prepare grains and other foods.
Ceres had a single child with Jupiter, Proserpina. A long time ago Pluto wanted a wife so he consulted Jupiter, who gave him Proserpina, daughter of Ceres. Pluto gave Proserpina a magical pomegranate seed as a welcoming gift. When Ceres found out of this she was furious and caused a huge dearth over the planet until her daughter was returned to her. Jupiter was then forced to bring Proserpina back to the surface. However, since she ate the pomegranate seed, Proserpina had to return to Pluto for half of each year to be his wife. Ceres then created winter in her grief.
Every year on April 19th there is a festival called the Cerealia dedicated to Ceres. It is said that once in a millennia Ceres flies over the festival in her chariot drawn by winged dragons to grant everyones prayers. Her symbols are the cornucopia, the winged snake, and the lotus flower. Some animals that are sacred to Ceres are pigs and snakes.
