Demeter is daughter of Cronus and Rhea, and has five siblings; Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, and Hestia. When her brothers split up the world between themselves her sister, Hestia, was completely thrown aside and not allowed into the Council of Thirteen because she was simply the goddess of the hearth. Demeter was the Greek Goddess of farming, the harvest, and fertility.
Demeter and her brother, Zeus, had Persephone together. When Zeus gave Persephone to Hades to be his wife, Demeter put a great dearth on the world until her daughter was returned. Zeus then took Persephone back out of the underworld, but since Hades had cursed Persephone with a pomegranate seed she had to return to him for half of each year.
Demeter's Symbols are the cornucopia, wheat-ears, the winged snake, and the lotus staff. Animals that are sacred to Demeter are pigs and snakes.
