Hades is a son of Cronus and Rhea. He and his two brothers, Poseidon and Zeus, split up the world for themselves when they grew up; Zeus getting the sky, Poseidon getting the seas, and Hades getting the underworld and everything under the earth. Hades became the Greek God of the dead and King of the Underworld.
Hades was also gifted Cerberus, a 10ft tall, three-headed hellhound to be the King of the Hellhounds. Hellhounds were like an army of dark spirits that were a mix between a lion, tiger, and hyena. Hellhounds could also shadow travel, which was teleportation by traveling down to the underworld and the coming back up in a completely different place of their choice.
Hades' three sisters, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia, despised him, all for different reasons. Hestia and Hera's reasons are unknown but Demeter's reason is quite reasonable. A long time ago Hades wanted a wife so he consulted Zeus, who gave him Persephone, daughter of Demeter. Hades gave Persephone a magical pomegranate seed as a welcoming gift. When Demeter found out of this she was furious and caused a huge dearth over the entire world until her daughter was returned to her. Zeus was then forced to bring Persephone back to the surface. However, since she ate the pomegranate seed, Persephone had to return to Hades for half of each year to be his wife.
When people died they were buried with a coin so they could pay Charon, the ferryman of the acid river, The River Styx. After crossing the river the spirits had to pass Cerberus who would only let the dead through. Then the spirits would have to stand in front of the Judges of the Dead where they would find out where they would spend the rest of eternity, in the fields of death (hell) or in the great village of the underworld (heaven).
